How can the surfaces of our buildings become part of a greener, healthier, and more resilient city?

The Green Roofs & Walls Forum Prague 2026 will bring together architects, designers, researchers, green infrastructure professionals, public officials, and other experts from across Europe to explore the growing role of green roofs, living walls, green façades, and vegetation on buildings.

The international program moves beyond aesthetics to examine how these living systems can contribute to biodiversity, stormwater management, climate adaptation, and urban resilience. Topics include biodiverse and blue-green roofs, biosolar systems that combine vegetation and solar energy, water-retention roofs, fire safety, recycled growing substrates, wastewater reuse, green façade systems, and structural considerations.

One particularly relevant discussion will focus on Nature-Positive Buildings, examining how water, biodiversity, and resilience can become more intentionally integrated into buildings and cities. Other European perspectives will include green façade standards and practices in Austria and examples of green infrastructure implementation from the Czech Republic and other countries.

The forum illustrates an important expansion of the conversation about plants and the built environment. Living vegetation can be considered not only at the landscape level or inside a building, but as part of the building envelope itself—creating opportunities to reconnect architecture with natural systems while addressing environmental performance.

The experience begins a day before the conference with a September 7 technical tour of green roofs and walls around Prague. One stop is the Prague Zoo, where participants will examine three green roofs designed to connect architecture with biodiversity and local habitats, as well as interior green walls in the zoo’s new gorilla pavilion.

The forum will also announce the winners of the 2026 Green Roof of the Year competition and conclude with networking among professionals working to advance living architecture across Europe. Czech-English simultaneous interpretation will be provided throughout the conference.

As buildings become greener, the opportunity to integrate living plants extends from interiors to façades, rooftops, and the surrounding landscape—creating a more connected approach to nature throughout the built environment.
